Sandwiched between Coimbra and Figueira da Foz, the municipality of Montemor-o-Velho tends to be somewhat overlooked and we have not yet been able to find any Montemor-o-Velho holiday rentals.  The river Mondego flows through Montemor-o-Velho on its way to the sea at Figueira da Foz and most of  the municipality, including the main town of Montemor-o-Velho lies on the northern bank.

Much use has been made of the river with several small waterways to be discovered in the town and some restored water wheels give evidence of the historic importance of the river as a means of power.  This is an important rice-growing area – again thanks to the proximity of the Mondego which used to flood its banks rather like a mini-Nile.

Although there seems to be a paucity of holiday rentals in Montemor-o-Velho, the area is much visited as there are several attractions worthy of note.  In 2010, a splendid new regatta facility was completed just in time to host the European Rowing Championships.  This was a real coup for a small town and really put Montemor-o-Velho on the map – in the rowing world anyway.
